Amazon.co.uk Review
Rank 'em how you like, Rubber Soul is an undeniable pivot point in the Fab Four's varied discography no matter where, or how, you first heard it. So many classics: "Drive My Car" and "Nowhere Man" merge the early combustible Beatifics to a burgeoning studio consciousness; "The Word" can be read as a pre-psych warning shot; the sitar-laden "Norwegian Wood" and the evocative "Girl" (the latter written on the last night of the sessions) stand as turning points in John Lennon's oeuvre. George finally emerges too, with the McGuinn-ish "If I Needed Someone". --Don Harrison

2009 CD: Poor remastering.

2009 CD: Poor remastering.
The CD may reveal new details on portable devices or in a car; however, it is a rather frustrating experience on a decent kit. Dynamic range apparently is severely compressed; as a result the sound is subjectively unpleasant - all just loud and lacking any climax.
This release does not do the justice to the album.
OH, what could have been...

It's too bad that the Beatles' policy for releasing material meant they put out some awesome singles without those songs being included on the albums. Just think what Rubber Soul could have been if "The Word", "What Goes On" and "Run For Your Life" had been replaced by "Day Tripper", "We Can Work It Out" and "Yesterday". A shame they were forced to put such subpar material on this album.
Rubberised greatness

We sang to every tune on the whole album. Brought back great memories of the early days and the emerging influence and diversity of The Beatles. I don't care what age you are this is well worth a listen. Written through nostalgic tears but there is nothing to beat class.
Mono please

Yes, this is a brilliant album, but the odd stereo mix makes it sound both disconcerting and far less exciting than the original vinyl record. I'm guessing that the aim of the remastering process was to give clear instrument separation, but the effect is that when you hear a tambourine, it isn't "in the mix", it sounds more like a friend banging the thing next to your head in time with the record.
When I got this for Christmas, I was inspired to steal my parents' vinyl copy and use my recording studio software to rip the audio as a 20bit wav file. I recognise that this isn't an option for most people, but it sounds great!
I suggest trying to get hold of a pirated copy of the mono mixes which are being released as a boxset - I don't think it's reasonable to charge people for all of the albums - I love this record, Revolver, Yellow Submarine, but can't stand Abbey Road.
Why is it that I can do a better job than trained engineers with the original tapes?
This album is only about 35 mins long - why couldn't they release both the stereo and mono versions on one disc?
