Amazon.co.uk Review
Before Sgt. Pepper's, no one seriously thought of rock music as actual art. That all changed in 1967, though, when John, Paul, George and Ringo (with "A Little Help" from their friend, producer George Martin) created an undeniable work of art which remains, after 3-plus decades, one of the most influential albums of all time. From Lennon's evocative word/sound pictures (the trippy "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds", the carnival-like "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite") and McCartney's music hall-styled "When I'm 64", to Harrison's Eastern-leaning "Within You Without You", and the avant-garde mini-suite, "A Day in the Life", Sgt. Pepper's was a milestone for both 1960s music and popular culture in general. --Billy Altman

It is excellent but don't expect the best album of all time.

I'm sure you've heard 'Sgt. Pepper' touted as the greatest album of all time. It's not, but it's also not a bad or even mediocre album; it represents the peak of the most important band that ever existed. I really don't like 'She's Leaving Home' and 'Within You Without You' is droning. Otherwise there's not much to criticize; every track is a really enjoyable listen. No serious music collection would be complete without this album.
It was 20 years ago today!

One of the greatest albums of all time by in my own humble opinion the greatest band of all time.
Very Psychedellic and painstakingly produced over many months by the Beatles and their producer George Martin.
Stand out tracks for myself are:
With a little help from my Friends
Lovely Rita
Good Morning, Good Morning
Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)
A Day in the Life
Basically an essential album for anyone who has a love for music, and if you didn't appreciate the music of The Beatles before you will after listening to Sgt Pepper.
the most over-rated LP ever

This is arguably the most overrated and over-indulgent pieces of music ever recorded. It's false reputation for greatness and innovation has been peddled by successive generations of critics. But judging by a growing litany of reviewers' comments on Amazon, the veneer is finally wearing off - and not before time.
The lyrical content of this tosh is resplendent with overblown, pretentious and overindulgent nursery rhymes and Vaudevillian tunes such as 'Lovely Rita' and 'When I'm Sixty Four' and 'With A Little Help From My Friends', coupled with lightweight pyschedlia of the likes of 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds'.
Whilst many of their creative contemporaries had advanced from the melodic ditty, the Beatles lumbered on with the nursery rhymes. Tunes like 'Fixing A Hole' and 'Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite', were inspired by the music halls, circuses and small town bands which represented the antidotal pinnacle of the social-moral revolution that was happening all around them.
SPLHCB helped perpetuate a status-quo that many of their radical contemporaries were attempting to break. It was a record that, as critic Piero Scaruffi remarked, was essentially an album of overblown pop ditties produced as a response to Pet Sounds and one that was cynically adapted to fit in to the style of the hippies, whilst many of their contemporaries like Red Crayola and Pink Floyd were "playing long free form suites - at times cacophonous, often strictly instrumental - that bordered on avant garde."
Scaruffi hits the nail on the head: "SPLHCB" he says, "is nothing more than a concept album about the discovery of being able to put together a concept album."
That's the cynical approach the Beatles had in relation to their music.
A Good Album

I bought this album because I thought I ought to have something by the world's most famous pop group, even though I am not a fan of them, I much prefer Wings and Paul's Solo recordings. However this is a good album, with songs quite differrent to their singles. When I'm 64, is one of those tracks and sounds like it could have come from the 1940's. Other good songs here are Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, For The Benefit Of Mr Kite and the title track, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. I maybe unusual, but I like this better than mamy of their smash hits and am glad to have it among my record collection.
