Amazon.co.uk Review

The Beatles' last days as a band were as productive as any major pop phenomenon that was about to split. After recording the ragged-but-right Let It Be, the group held on for this ambitious effort, an album that was to become their best-selling. Though all four contribute to the first side's writing, John Lennon's hard-rocking, "Come Together" and "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" make the strongest impression. A series of song fragments edited together in suite form dominates side two; its portentous, touching, official close ("Golden Slumbers" / "Carry That Weight" / "The End") is nicely undercut, in typical Beatles fashion, by Paul McCartney's cheeky "Her Majesty", which follows. --Rickey Wright

Reviews

A pleasurable listening experience.

'Abbey Road' is one of those albums that you have to listen to in sequence (the second half all segues into each other anyway). It probably stands as the Beatles' second best album after Sgt. Pepper. George Harrison's contributions 'Something' and 'Here Comes the Sun' exceed Lennon and McCartney's for once. The only reasons it doesn't receive five stars is `Maxwell's Silver Hammer' (which is dreadful) and the fact that 'I Want You' goes on too long. Well worth owning.

Fantastic

Considering The Beatles made this when the band was falling apart makes this album all the more impressive.

It's full of classic songs and there is a natural flow to the order of the songs (typically). From the beautiful 'Something,' to the more upbeat, funny 'Maxwell's Silver Hammer' and 'Octopus' Garden,' the epic 'You Never Give Me Your Money,' there is something for everyone. And the final tracks 'Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End' make for a fitting end, as the entire album comes together.

This album is a must-have for any sane music lover.

Average effort from the most over-rated band ever

During the mid-to-late 1960s when progressive artists was performing songs of protest during a period of demonstrations and social upheaval, the Beatles were singing about 'Maxwell's Silver Hammer' and 'Octupus's Garden'

In a way, Abbey Road, under the auspices of George Martin, encapsulated their entire career in one album. This is an uneven recording that is essentially a mini rock opera of the kind Zappa had done previously. 'Abbey Road' culminated in an impressive 22 minute suit which partly offset the dross.

Abbey Road is essentially little more than up-dated musical hall for middle-class part-time 'weekend' hippies who misguidingly believed that they were listening to something original and groundbreaking.

Just like the old days

Bought this to replace my lost music and wondered if the Stereo version would be any good, well I've got to say.., I am very impressed with the results..., Just a shame it's released in a cardboard sleeve.
