Amazon.co.uk Review

The closest the Beatles came to a greatest hits package, this document of the early part of their career features hit singles (in chronological order) and selected album tracks, running from "Love Me Do" through the groundbreaking Rubber Soul and Revolver albums. While this may be an excellent intro for beginners, real fans will never be content with only selections, especially when you're dealing with those aforementioned albums. Capitol packages the collection on two discs, copying the original vinyl version--but, of course, CDs hold more music than records did. Still, you do get 26 bona fide classics, so there's no real need to complain. --Bill Holdship

The Past, The Present, The Future

Where can you start in reviewing a Beatles album least of all a collection of their greatest hits?

First of all I wasn't even born when this was first released. The Beatles music is something that I grew up with, I knew the songs I knew the names of the band members even though they had broken up long ago. Along with Elvis Presley they are considered the best, the tops the stars of popular music. There are many reasons why. Far too many for me to write here. All I will say is Lennon & McCartney have never been bettered as singer/songwriters and I doubt ever will.

This the Red Album covers 1962-1966. It is not a complete record of the band's hits of the period, but with 26 songs over two c.d's it covers a lot. One of the things you will notice when listening to this album is the change in style. The Beatles more than any other band evolved over time. Listen to Love Me Do and Please Please Me. These are sung by fresh faced youngsters. They are songs of quick tempo and not of great meaning. These early songs were not over differcult. By the time you reach the end of the first c.d the songs are more developed. The last track on c.d one is Yesterday. What can be said of this track beyond you just have to listen to it to understand. Yesterday is probably the first Beatles Masterpiece and there would be many more to come.

The second c.d begins with Help and has many more great tracks. We Can Work It Out and Drive My Car are included here. Paperback Writer and the wonderful Eleanor Rigby show how well the band has progressed. By 1966 The Beatles were the biggest band in the world and after listening to this you will know why.

a great collection of songs, great to here the early singles and i don't even mind the fact it ends with 'yellow submarine' that said, side 4 is the best side.

interesting to notice that there is no george harrison songs which is something the double album lacks.

makes me want to go on and get all the other albums!

Essential Beatles

Our ten year old boy has been studying the 1960s in his history lessons - how old does that me feel! - and has developed a thing for the Beatles. We bought him both the Red and the Blue albums for Christmas. So many albums boast the title 'greatest hits' and contain a collection of mediocre, transient songs that don't age at all well. With these albums the Beatles don't have to go for the big sell-in. After the White Album, Red and Blue will do for titles for two albums that are crammed full with many of the greatest songs ever written.

The Red album is a double CD charting the early years. It's a collection of short and catchy standards, nearly all under three minutes, showing off Lennon and McCartney's genius and they don't need a write-up from me. Just look at the track listing.
