No surprises
Review date: 2009-04-24 Rating: 6 out of 10
As a Beatles fan, but not necessarily a John Lennon fan, this CD presented me with no surprises. It has some great, classic tracks, and some stuff that I just can't warm to. If you're a Beatles fan, it's worth adding to the collection just so that you have some of JL's work represented, but if you, like me, have found JL's solo output variable, then this CD won't do anything to change that opinion.
Could have been better

Albums like this are aimed at the kind of collector who just wants all the Greatest Hits from every major rock star.It was advertised on TV so its like Lennon for the Masses rather than an attempt to create a worthwhile product.
It starts off well enough, chronlogical order up to the last track which straight away screws up the concept Though I personally detest Cold Turkey its got no place on here and was a Plastic Ono Band single anyway.
With 19 tracks the cover of Stand by me should have been removed and replaced by one of the superb songs from Sometime In New York City-yes there were many but people never have minds of their own.
A superb collection of the best solo work of John Lennon

I have spent the afternoon listening to the respective "greatest hits" albums for each of the Beatles during their solo careers, and [in my opinion] "The John Lennon Collection" is clearly the best of the quartet. The nineteen songs collected here represent less than a dozen year's work, from "Give Peace a Chance" (with both Lennon and Tommy Smothers on guitar) in 1969 to "(Just Like) Starting Over" in 1980. Listening to these familiar songs again, what strikes me is the way they represent the different facets of Lennon's songwriter persona. Here is Lennon the angry young man ("Instant Karma!" & "Power to the People"), Lennon the romantic ("Woman" & "Love"), Lennon the father ("Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)"), Lennon the dreamer ("#9 Dream"), Lennon the pacifist ("Happy XMas (War Is Over)"), and Lennon the idealist ("Imagine"). Ironically, in trying to find himself in the decade after the Beatles split up, Lennon ended up revealing more of himself than did McCartney, Harrison and Starr in their solo careers. The other nice thing about this collection is that off the top of my head I cannot name another song from Lennon's solo albums that I would have wanted to have seen included.
A cracking good collection of songs!

This album is a collection of some of John Lennon's best known songs from his short-lived solo career (less than 10 years is far too short in my opinion!).
It is just as good or perhaps even better than the more recent Lennon Legend CD because it doesn't just give the singles he released it also offers such tracks as I'm Losing You which is a real belter of a song.
Also on a more poignant note, all the photos on the album are taken from Annie Leibovitz's photo shoot on December 8th 1980, the day John Lennon was killed, so they are touching in their own right.
I have noticed that this album plays particulary well in a car as it gets everyone bopping along without causing any accidents! A worthy addition to your music collection.
